Unit1 Brief 01-Sketching & Notetaking & Mapping

During the documentation process, I realized that my perspective as someone standing outside the fences differs significantly from the experience of those inside. By imagining myself in their position, I discovered that fences oscillate between providing a sense of protection and evoking feelings of imprisonment. As the fences grow taller, the psychological gap between the inside and outside widens—creating not just a physical separation, but also a greater emotional divide. This shift made me reflect on how fences act as more than just physical barriers; they also serve as powerful emotional and psychological boundaries.

Next, I began sketching to document the various fence forms, categorizing them by height, top designs, and function. Through these sketches, I analyzed how different fence forms impact sensory experiences. For example, fences with sharp, intimidating tops evoke a sense of danger and unease, while those with softer, curved designs suggest a gentler form of protection. These subtle differences in form can significantly alter the emotional response to a space.

To better organize my observations, I created a fence map, documenting the various types of fences I encountered in the area. On this map, I marked each fence’s height, materials, and functional distribution, allowing me to systematically analyze their roles and effects within the space.
